1970 Arctic Cat Puma EXT 340, Serial Number: 048052, Model Number: 340JPEXT. This snowmobile is a very rare example of the first year Arctic Cat offered high-performance EXT versions of standard trail sleds, intend for stock-class racing. This Puma EXT 340, powered by a single-cylinder 336cc Rockwell/JLO 340 engine, is one of only 34 produced, according to reported production records. Engines used in 1970 EXT models were modified by the engine manufacturer. The engine in this example has a crankcase tag for the standard L340 engine model but appears to have other components from the high-performance R340 engine, including a cylinder head with an angled spark plug and screws on the fan housing through the JLO/Rockwell logo that hold a special fan shroud. The cylinder part number is not visible so it cannot be confirmed that the engine has the 340R cylinder porting or other internal features. The original Tillotson carburetor has been replaced with a Walboro float bowl carb, a common performance upgrade in the era. The muffler does not appear to be original and has a large-diameter outlet through the belly pan. The engine has spark and good compression and rolls over freely. The tunnel is straight and shows no cleat damage under the seat. The seat and backrest are original and with light fading on the leopard print sections but otherwise in excellent condition. The correct tail lamps are in good condition. The 4.5-gallon “lightning bolt” fuel tank features excellent paint, has the correct cap and is very clean inside. The “big mouth” hood is in excellent condition and may have been painted at one time. The blue-tint windshield is original. The dash features the correct brown inserts for switches and holds an 80 mph Arctic Cat speedometer showing 3455 miles. Skis and ski shocks are in good condition with light rust on top of the skis. The track is in very good condition and shows minimal wear on the steel cleats. The suspension is in good condition. Suspension mounting points have been moved up to go through the tunnel. The original steel mounting tabs are in place. The track drivers appear to be original white material and are chipped in spots. This snowmobile is in unrestored, generally original condition. This snowmobile has been in covered storage for several seasons and will need routine maintenance. The registration card is not available.
