1978 John Deere Spitfire, Serial Number: J34AG 084258M. Marketed as the "lightest trail sled available and an ideal ride for a woman", the John Deere Spitfire was presented as an effort by Deere to make snowmobiling more affordable by providing less-expensive trail sleds that did not negatively impact performance. In 1978, its first year of production, 8,024 Spitfire models were reportedly built. With a claimed dry weight of just 275 pounds, the Spitfire was nimble on the trail, could be easily loaded into the bed of a pickup, and made the most of its 28 horsepower 339cc Kohler K3402FA free-air engine. Magazine testing reported a top speed of 55 mph with an adult aboard. A key feature of the powertrain is the direct drive system, which eliminates the typical chain drive between the driven clutch and the drive shaft. Instead the driven clutch is mated directly to the drive shaft. This design was part of the effort to reduce weight, complexity and cost. This example of the Spitfire is in unrestored condition. The cleated track and suspension appear to be in good condition. The skis show light rust and the ski shocks have significant rust. The hood shines and is free of damage. The windshield is cracked at its lower right corner. The engine has spark, good compression and rolls freely. The seat upholstery is in fair condition. This snowmobile has been in covered storage for several seasons and will need routine maintenance. The registration card is not available.
